Karen Perrin Artist Statement

I began working with oils over thirty years ago, attending classes once a week throughout the years.  I spent fourteen years studying with Marshall Drew – a local artist and photographer.  Marshall taught me how to mix paint and watched me experiment and grow, prodding me on with gentle guidance and sarcastic wit.  He once told me that some grapes I was painting looked like “fish eggs”.  I wasn’t insulted – he was right, and with practice, I believe my still lifes have greatly improved.

After Marshall passed away, I worked on my own for awhile, but missed the camaraderie of class and an expert’s opinion. I found that person in Bob Kozora – a renowned New England artist whose works are seen in many galleries, as well as homes and offices. Bob has helped me refine my work, and I am indebted to him for all of the hours spent molding me into a better artist. I consider myself a contemporary realist, but stray once in awhile to semi-abstract as portrayed in the “Piano Man”. I work mainly from photos and love to create a mood with my paintings. As Bob and I recently discussed, an artist never stops learning – there is always room for improvement, and for taking on a new challenge. I have done many paintings for people of their favorite vacation spots, or family home. If you like my work, and feel you would like an oil of a treasured photo, please give me a call at 401-377-2958. Or e-mail me at kprp4546@cox.net
