Stephen Collins Artist Statement

After a thirty-plus year hiatus, I finally returned to my first love (painting) a little over a year ago, devoting myself to the study of watercolor. Most of my work is representational, though I've been known to paint an abstract occasionally. My preferred subjects have been portraits and landscapes, though I remain open to whatever comes along.

As for method, I distinctly prefer painting in glazes. In fact, unless I consciously avoid it, my tendency is to lay down layers of pure color rather than mix ahead of time. Though I generally paint realistically, I tend to paint quickly with little regard for small details.

Other than the paintings marked for sale in the gallery, I paint watercolor portraits on commission. I prefer to take my own reference photos, but will work from existing images if necessary.
